Share these facts with the child(ren) in your life:
- Peru is the third largest country in South America.
- About half of Peru is covered by the Amazon Rainforest.
- Peru also has mountains (the Andes Mountains), beaches, deserts and more.
- Peru has three national languages: Spanish, Quechua, and Aymara.
- The Incans were a large and important society of people who lived in Peru over 500 years ago.
The Rainforest of Peru
- A rainforest is a place with a lot of rain.
- The Amazon rainforest is a huge jungle with plants and animals that don’t live anywhere else on the Earth.
- It is made up of two types of jungle: the lowland jungle that is very warm and rainy and the highland jungle which has multiple different weather patterns.
- Peru has the largest number of bird species in the world and many of them live in the Amazon.
- It is estimated that there are 3,000 edible fruits in the rainforest!
The Sounds of the Rainforest

- Have your children write down or draw pictures of what hear.
- Ask them:
- What sounds are familiar?
- What sounds have they never heard before?
- How do the sounds make them feel?
DIY Rainstick
After listening to the sounds of the rainforest, bring them into your home or classroom with a rainstick instrument DIY,

For each rainstick, you’ll need just a handful of materials:
- A cardboard tube, ideally a paper towel tube
- Pipe cleaners, tin foil, or wire that can be twisted and put inside the tube to help make the sound
- Uncooked rice, beans, beads or another small, hard object
- Tape or glue
- Materials to decorate your rainstick – paint, markers, string, etc.
