Music Mind Maps

  1. Write the name of the piece and the composer in the center of the worksheet.
  2. In the first branch out of circles (the purple circles) write down specific program elements that the music is trying to portray. To use Vivaldi’s Winter from The Four Seasons as an example, you might choose to include the four following program elements: teeth chattering in the cold, sitting next to a warm fire, taking slow and careful steps on ice, and winter winds battling and blowing.
  3. For each of those program elements, you’ll then include details for the following categories:
    • Dynamics – How loud or soft the music was
    • Pitch – Overall, was the music low, high, mixed? Was the pitch of the melody high or low? Was the music major or minor?
    • Texture – Were there many instruments playing at once, or just a few? Were they playing in unison or separately? Did the music feel thick or thin?
    • Tempo – How fast or slow was the music
    • Tone color – What instruments were used? What techniques did they use to play their instruments (for ex – pizzicato, long or short notes, etc.)? What adjectives would you use to describe the type of sound the instruments were making?
