Present-Day Women Make Long-Lasting Impressions on Music

During the final week of Women’s History Month, we celebrate Modern Musician, Composer and Teacher Chen Yi. Born in China in 1953, Yi studied music at a young age, but abruptly stopped when she was forced into labor by the Chinese government. While serving in the country, Yi continued to learn about Chinese folk culture and music.

Her learnings influenced her musical blends of Chinese and Western classical music, and led to her eventual designation as the first Chinese woman to receive a degree in music composition from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. Yi was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize for Music for her composition of Si Ji (Four Seasons), and received notable awards and fellowships from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the Guggenheim Foundation.
